“It’s like using her warm regard as a self-esteem dialysis machine,” Real says. “When the warm regard is flowing, you feel pumped up and all’s well with the world. When it’s not flowing, you get scared and lonely. I’ve been there. I call it a self-esteem well-being crash. Empty, dark, jagged, cold, sharp, agitated.”
When you casually click on an article and suddenly feel profoundly compelled to look up every book mentioned. It was easy to find fierce intimacy by Terry Real on Hoopla for free—turns out it’s a lecture, not a book. But I’ll definitely read his books at some point. He talks a lot about self-esteem, which I’m always harping on about being strangely under-discussed in the self-help world. I really like what he has to say about it—right up there with Gloria Steinem and Tracy McMillan for me.

“The public and private Rock Hudson” - reported by Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning (originally broadcasted June 26, 2023)
For nearly four decades as a star of films and TV, Rock Hudson was Hollywood's epitome of heterosexual desire. But he also led a secret life as a closeted gay man, and in 1985 became the first celebrity to die of AIDS. Correspondent Tracy Smith looks back on the public and private lives of Hudson, and talks with Stephen Kijak, director of the new HBO documentary Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed; biographer Mark Griffin; and actress Linda Evans, who shared a romantic scene with Hudson on Dynasty at a time when some feared that a kiss could transmit HIV.

‘When you see folks sort of clutching their pearls around this very dark, dark humor that has come up with the killing of the CEO, clutching their pearls at how horrific that is without at the same time talking about how horrific this system is and how murderous the system is. I don’t have a lot of patience for that.’ - Tracie McMillan, Detroit-based journalist and author.
Her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1981 and later was in a car accident. Michigan Radio writes that ‘Soon after, insurance companies began to fight over who would cover the medical expenses because of her pre-existing condition.’
